6th Annual 72 Hour Film Shootout to be held June 26 - 29, 2009
The Asian American Film Lab (AAFilmLab), in association with Asian CineVision, is pleased to announce the Sixth Annual 72 Hour Film Shootout (“Shootout”) taking place this year from June 26-29, 2009. The Shootout is a nationwide competition where filmmaking teams have 72 hours to complete short films up to five minutes in length. Teams are given a common theme at the start of the competition to use creatively as they see fit. Teams compete for cash and prizes and the chance to have their films screened at film festivals.
This year’s Shootout finalists will be selected by a panel film industry professionals including cinematographer Ellen Kuras (Be Kind, Rewind, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind), director Michael Kang (The Motel, West 32nd), Marci Phillips (Executive Director of Primetime Casting for ABC Entertainment), producer Mynette Louie (Children of Invention), actor Justin Chon (Twilight), filmmaker Kazuhiro Soda (Campaign, Mental), and Tanuj Chopra (Punching at the Sun).
The Shootout intends to create opportunities for Asian Americans to demonstrate their talent, gain exposure in the entertainment industry, and to have an impact on the visibility of Asian American stories and characters in film and television. One of the Shootout requirements is that at least one key production member (e.g., director, producer, or writer) and a principal actor from each team must be of Asian descent. New for this year is a special judging category for student filmmakers. Teams that have at least half of their members submit active, valid Student IDs are eligible for the Student Film Award.
The 6th Annual 72 Hour Film Shootout begins on Friday, June 26, 2008, at 8PM (EDT). The competition theme will be announced at the New York City launch party at 8PM at White Rabbit Lounge (145 East Houston Street) and simultaneously posted online at http://www.aafilmlab.org. New York-based singer/songwriter Cynthia Lin will be performing live at the launch party.
The Top Ten Films will screen at the Asian American International Film Festival organized by Asian CineVision (July 23-26, 2009). The screening and awards presentation will be held at the new Museum of Chinese in America located in New York’s Chinatown which will open its doors to the public this June. Awards will be given out in individual categories such as Best Actor/Actress, Cinematography, Editing, Originality and Audience Favorite.
In connection with the Shootout, AAFilmLab will be hosting several pre-launch events including workshops and mixers for anyone interested in competing as well as a post-screening wrap party.

The AAFilmLab is proud to announce that our member, Amy Chang, is appearing in “Children of Invention,” a feature film written and directed by Tze Chun, which will premiere in the Spectrum section of the 2009 Sundance Film Festival.
In “Children of Invention,” two young children living illegally in a model apartment outside Boston are left to fend for themselves when their hardworking mother disappears. The film is Chun’s debut feature and is loosely based on his own Sundance ‘07 short “Windowbreaker,” which earned him a spot on Filmmaker Magazine’s annual “25 New Faces of Independent Film” list.
The film stars Cindy Cheung (“Lady in the Water,” “Robot Stories”) and the amazing newcomers Michael Chen (age 10) and Crystal Chiu (age 8). It was produced by Mynette Louie, who co-produced “Mutual Appreciation;” shot by Chris Teague, who lensed Sundance shorts “Man,” “The Second Line,” and “Salt Kiss;” edited by Anna Boden, who co-wrote, produced, and edited “Half Nelson” and co-wrote/directed, produced, and edited “Sugar;” co-produced by Dave Saltzman, who production supervised “Sugar” and production managed “Momma’s Man;” scored by T. Griffin, who scored Berlin Teddy Award winner “A Walk Into the Sea: Danny Williams & the Warhol Factory” and was a 2008 fellow of the Sundance Composer’s Lab; and cast by veteran NYC casting director Susan Shopmaker (“Afterschool,” “Great World of Sound,” “Shortbus”).
“Children of Invention” was financed by Sasquatch Films and Impact Partners. It is the first narrative film to be financed by Impact Partners, which has funded socially conscious documentaries such as Oscar winners “Born Into Brothels” and “Freeheld,” and Emmy winner “Ghosts of Abu Ghraib.”

WINGS OF DEFEAT a film by Risa Morimoto and Linda Hoaglund
WINNER, Best Documentary, Women Film Critics Circle 2008
NOMINATED, Progie Award for Best Overlooked FIlm 2008, James Egee Cinema Circle
“Wings of Defeat is a remarkably fascinating documentary…”
–Henry Louis Gates, Jr., Harvard Univ.
“Wings of Defeat is an extraordinary film, revealing the terrible power of nationalist fervor as it seizes young minds, and makes them both victims and accomplices in the crime of modern warfare.”
–Howard Zinn, Author, A People’s History of the United States
“Today, the kamikaze campaign remains surrounded by misconceptions—something this powerful film will change…”
–Richard Muller, WWII Magazine
In Japan, WWII Kamikaze are still revered as self-sacrificing heroes. Internationally, they remain a potent symbol of fanaticism. Until now, few outsiders knew that many Kamikaze survived their suicide missions. The candid, heartbreaking testimony of surviving Kamikaze conveys the true depth of war’s travesty. Sixty years later, these humble men tell us about the horrors of the cockpit, their dramatic survival and the survivors’ guilt still haunting them.

“Gran Torino” is the upcoming film directed by and starring Clint Eastwood and a group of talented Hmong Asian American actors. “Gran Torino” will be the first film since “Million Dollar Baby” where Mr. Eastwood will star in and direct. Clint Eastwood portrays a Korean War Veteran who is forced by his Hmong Asian American neighbor to confront his racial prejudices after his teenager neighbor, Tao Vang Lor, attempts to steal his 1972 Gran Torino. The Hmong actors used improvised Hmong and English dialogue to create an authentic film to help convey the Hmong culture. A lively debate has already begun within the Hmong community regarding the accurate portrayal of the Hmong culture in the movie. Actor and friend of the AAFilmLab, Doua Moua plays Fong/ Spider, Tao Vang Lor’s older cousin and the antagonist role in the film. “Gran Torino” opened on Friday Dec. 12th.

The Asian American Film Lab has received a grant from the Asian American Arts Alliance to produce The Sixth Annual 72 Hour Film Shootout, a competition for filmmaking teams nationwide to write, shoot, edit and produce short digital films
The Asian American Arts Alliance awarded grants to eleven New York City arts groups through the JP Morgan Chase Small Arts Organizations Regrant (SOAR) Program. Selected by an independent panel of community leaders, the grants support music, theater, literature, film, dance and interdisciplinary projects from groups who identify as Asian American, or who are working in collaboration with Asian American artists and on Asian American themes. “We are thrilled with the broad range of strong community-based projects we are able to support with this program” said Nico Daswani, the new Program Director of the Alliance.
The program is part of the Alliance’s mission to bring increased financial and other resources to Asian American artists and arts groups in New York City. The Alliance has been providing re-grants to artists and groups since 1994, and has worked in partnership with JP Morgan Chase Foundation since 1997 on this program to support small organizations in this community.
This Tuesday, 72 Hour Film Shootout Judge and editor extraordinaire Jean Tsien will conduct an editing workshop with the AAFilmLab.
