Adding Production Value to a Low/No Budget Film: Presented by Descendant Films

Thursday, May 10, 2012
7:00pm until 8:30pm
The Azure Lounge, 333 E 91 St., Manhattan
Seating will be limited. RSVP to (JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) or on facebook at http://www.facebook.com/AAFilmLab.

To enable our members to put their best foot forward in this year’s 72 Hour Shootout and maximize their marketing potential at the 2012 Asian American International Film Festival, in conjunction with Asian CineVision, Film Lab is rolling out a spring series of how-to filmmaking seminars! Come, learn, network, and start putting together your shootout teams!

Program Description:

Money. Obviously the more you have the better. But you’ve got no money and barely any time to complete your short film. How do you hide the fact that your short film is low or no budget? How do you make people believe what they are watching is real and is happening at that very moment?

Low/No budget films are notorious for things like bad acting, bad locations, bad lighting, etc. It’s also hard on the morale of your cast and crew when they walk onto a set knowing that a bad film is an inevitable fate.

In this workshop, we’ll discuss how to increase the quality of a film that is running on practically no budget. We’ll cover our experiences in all aspects of production from producing and acting to location and sound. Half of the discussion will be technical and the other half will be “big notes to think about.” We’ll field any questions you guys have along the way and try to find a solution or offer some alternatives on the spot. Feel free to network with us too.

Descendant Films is a narrative film production company based in New York City and Philadelphia. They have been active since 2010, and a lot of what they do involves working with Asian American artists from actors to models to musicians. Descendant Films want to share the Asian American experience and hope that these stories can reach a wide audience around the world. Check out who they are and their work at descendantfilms.com.

AAFilmLab Announces Spring Filmmaking Workshops Beginning April 12

To Enable Filmmakers to Put Their Best Foot Forward for the Shootout, AAFilmLab Will Roll Out A Series of Spring Filmmaking Workshops beginning on April 12!

The Asian American Film Lab (AAFilmLab) is pleased to announce the Eighth Annual 72 Hour Film Shootout (“Shootout”) will take place this summer under the auspices of and in collaboration with Asian CineVision. The Shootout is a nationwide competition in which filmmaking teams are given a common theme at the start and then have 72 hours to write, shoot, edit, and complete short films up to five minutes in length. Teams compete for cash, prizes and the chance to have their films screened at film festivals, both nationally and internationally.  The competition creates a valuable opportunity for Asian American filmmakers to demonstrate their talent, gain exposure in the entertainment industry and impact the visibility of Asian American stories and characters in film. One of the Shootout requirements is that at least one key production member (e.g., director, producer or writer) and a principal actor from each team must be of Asian descent.

To enable participants to hit the ground running upon the annoucement of the 2012 theme at the June 2012 Launch Party, AAFilmLab is coordinating a series of spring workshops to prep filmmakers for the Shootout with industry panels on virtually every aspect of filmmaking—from lighting to cameras.  Mark off your calendars for:

1.  Thursday, April 12, 6-9pm, Azure Lounge, NYC

2.  Thursday, May 10, 6-9pm, Azure Lounge, NYC

3.  June date and Launch Party TBA!

Help us help you put together your teams early, create dynamic group energy and make the best film of your life!

A Call For “Unfinished Works”
We are continuing going back to our roots with our original workshop format.  It’s an opportunity for us to help challenge and improve each other’s work, grow as a filmmakers and strengthen the bonds between us.  It’s a great way of progressing by problem solving while building community.  So, if you have an unfinished work, please bring it in to workshop!

We are still seeking “Unfinished Works” to workshop including, but not limited to:
1. Screenplays
2. Films in pre/post production
3. Acting monologues
4. Storyboarding, art direction including set, lighting, costume designs, sound design (including music) and editing choices, a specific scene challenge…basically any thing that isn’t complete that you need an outside perspective on to help you complete your vision.

To submit an “Unfinished Work,” please email (JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) with “Unfinished Work” in the subject line, including a description of your project (including format, length, what stage it’s in, & your projected goals for it) as well as the feedback your are seeking.

Sincerely,
AAFilmLab
